Local staging. Tools like LocalWP or DevKinsta let you run a full copy of the site on your own machine. This is the safest option for major changes (theme rebuilds, PHP version upgrades) because there’s zero chance of anything touching the live server.

A step a lot of site owners skip: WordPress has had a built-in way to declare environment type since version 5.5, using the WP_ENVIRONMENT_TYPE constant. A staging environment only protects you if it’s kept honest. The most common ways sites undermine their own staging setup:
- Letting staging drift out of sync with production for months, so tests pass on old data and fail on real data.
- Forgetting to block search engines on the staging URL, which creates duplicate content issues and confuses Google about which version is canonical.
