WooCommerce’s official Gift Cards extension costs $79 a year (prices checked October 2026). If you simply want to sell a gift card and let the customer redeem it at checkout, our free plugin HDWebmobile Gift Cards covers that, with every feature included.

When the paid extension is the better choice
- Buyers should send the card straight to a friend, with a message and a delivery date.
- You want one product with several amounts, or customers choosing the amount.
- You need reports and a full transaction log for accounting.
- You are moving codes in or out of another system (import / export).
When the free plugin is enough
- You sell a few fixed values, for example €25, €50 and €100 cards.
- You want customers to redeem in the coupon field they already know, with no new checkout step.
- You want codes that are always generated on the server with a secure random generator, never typed in or uploaded.
- You would rather keep the $79 a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is the free gift card plugin really free?
Yes. Every feature is included, it is GPL licensed and it is listed on WordPress.org. There is no paid version that unlocks more.
How does a customer redeem a gift card?
They type the code into WooCommerce’s normal “Have a coupon?” field at checkout. It works on both the classic and the block checkout.
What if the order is smaller than the card value?
Only the amount used is deducted. The rest stays on the card for the next order.
Can the buyer send the card to someone else?
Not directly in this version. The code is emailed to the buyer, who can forward it or print it.
